When shopping for toys, look for ones that stimulate problem-solving abilities, encourage social interaction, are easy to use, can be played with in a variety of ways, and are, of course, safe. Consider also these factors:

Focus on interests and abilities. What the child likes and can handle takes precedence. The age label on any box is a guideline that often reflects the manufacturer's optimism more than reality.

Consider the play space. Are the areas where your kids play big enough, flat enough, or well-bounded enough for the toy? For example, you'll need lots of flat open space for one toy, while another might be easier to learn on a carpeted surface.

Look for versatility. Toys that allow kids to write the story line or are suitable for kids of various ages are likely to hold their interest the longest. That was true of the higher-rated “maker” toys we tested.

Beware of needed extras. Batteries, of course, usually aren't included, and some toys require more than one size. Craft toys that provide just a few sheets of paper or a dollop of paint will need to be replenished. Of three origami books we reviewed, only one included the requisite paper.

Factor in mess potential. It's a given that a pottery wheel requires smocks and a covered work surface. But we were surprised that some toys led to so many spills.
